We are thrilled to announce that the Waddesdon Wing at Stoke Mandeville Hospital has been honoured with the “Best Acute Design” award at the prestigious Healthcare Design Awards 2025. This accolade celebrates innovation and excellence in the design of healthcare facilities that prioritize the well-being of patients and their families.
As the principal contractor for this project, Western Building Systems is immensely proud to have played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life. Our commitment to pushing the boundaries of architectural excellence is evident in the Waddesdon Wing’s design, which seamlessly combines functionality with a welcoming environment.
A Collaborative Effort
The success of the Waddesdon Wing is a testament to the collaborative efforts of all parties involved. Designed by the esteemed architects at Hunters, the project reflects a harmonious blend of creativity and practicality. The use of modern methods of construction (MMC) allowed for efficient off-site manufacturing at our state-of-the-art facilities, ensuring minimal disruption to the hospital’s ongoing operations during installation.
Patient-Centered Design
Spanning over 3,000 square meters, the Waddesdon Wing is thoughtfully divided to serve distinct patient groups. The ground floor is dedicated to paediatric care, featuring vibrant and engaging spaces designed to comfort young patients. Interactive motion walls, bursts of colour, and playful art installations transform the hospital experience into a more positive journey for children and their families.
The first floor caters to maternity and gynaecology services, offering a serene atmosphere with calming colours and natural materials. This tranquil setting ensures privacy and dignity for patients during their visits. The strategic layout not only enhances patient experience but also optimises operational efficiency within the hospital.
Innovative Construction Techniques
Embracing MMC, the project utilised a modular design approach. Steel structure modules were prefabricated and then assembled on-site, significantly reducing construction time and minimising on-site disruptions. This method also allowed for greater precision and quality control, resulting in a durable and sustainable facility.
A Commitment to Excellence
Receiving the “Best Acute Design” award reinforces our dedication to creating healthcare spaces that are not only functional but also uplifting for patients, staff, and visitors. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust for entrusting us with this project, and to all our partners and team members whose hard work and passion made this achievement possible.
At Western, we remain committed to delivering innovative construction solutions that positively impact communities and set new standards in healthcare design.
