Western proudly delivered the SNEE Endoscopy Unit for East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust, transforming local healthcare access. This 2,100m², modularly constructed facility on Colchester’s Turner Road campus boosts day procedure capacity for gastrointestinal endoscopy and colonoscopy, significantly reducing patient waiting times.
A key to success was the innovative hybrid modular construction combining robust concrete floors with prefabricated steel frame modules. This method ensured vibration control for sensitive medical equipment while speeding up construction, enabling early project completion despite complex site constraints within an active hospital environment.
Overcoming challenges like limited space, ongoing hospital operations, and piled foundations, Western coordinated precise service connections and met stringent clinical standards including radiation shielding. The unit also features sustainable elements such as photovoltaic panels, achieving an A1 energy rating and ‘Very Good’ BREEAM status.
Utilising Building Information Modelling (BIM) throughout the project supported design accuracy and risk reduction, keeping the build on schedule. The final outcome delivers improved clinical capacity and enhanced patient care experience while setting a new benchmark for modular healthcare construction projects in the UK.
This project showcases our commitment to innovative, efficient, and sustainable healthcare environments, benefiting patients and the NHS alike.
