The works at Gaelscoil Thulach na nÓg were carried as part of the Rapid Build School Programme 2013-2015. Western were contracted by the Department of Education and Skills to provide a new two storey 16 classroom school of 2500m2. Works on the project were carried out across a number of phases and involved the provision of a new car parking facility for the school and the provision of temporary accommodation.
As the Lead Design and Build Contractor on the project, Western were responsible for all works on the project. The building was constructed using a structural steel frame, with precast concrete floors and block plastered walls. The new building provided the school with space for 400 pupils as well as a new general purpose hall, a library and resource room.
Works at the site took place across four phases.
Phase 1– Removal of existing temporary accommodation and the provision of new temporary accommodation. A new construction entrance was also created at the school
Phase 2– This longest phase, lasted 28 weeks and saw the construction of the new school and junior play area.
Phase 3– In this phase students moved into the new school building, the old school building was demolished and temporary accommodation was removed.
Phase 4– This final phase saw the removal of the temporary car park and the making good of the green area used during construction.
This project was completed on time and within budget. It was delivered concurrently with a number of other school construction projects.
